Dr Deirdre Buckley GMC 4168014
Dr Buckley was awarded an academic University Entrance Scholarship in 1982 to study Medicine at University College Cork, from which she graduated in 1988. She specialised in dermatology as Registrar at the City of Dublin Skin and Cancer Hospital and Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham. She then moved to London for higher dermatology training at The Middlesex Hospital, King's College Hospital and St John's Hospital for Diseases of the Skin at St Thomas' Hospital.
She was awarded the Jacob Medal from the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland in 1994 for her research presentation on phototherapy, and Presenter of the Year Award 1996 from University Hospitals Birmingham for her clinical research on fungal infections in children.
Having enjoyed an excellent training in a number of specialist departments, she became a Consultant Dermatologist, first at The Great Western Hospital NHS Trust, Swindon, and subsequently at The Royal United Hospital NHS Trust, Bath, while working in private practice at The Bath Clinic and Sulis Hospital, Bath.
Throughout her career, Dr Buckley has had a special interest and a national profile in allergy and the skin, as well as in improving public health. She is an experienced media doctor, featuring on the BBC TV programme 'Dr Xand's Con or Cure' and on the BBC television and radio national news. Dr Buckley is the UK representative for the European Society of Contact Dermatitis and is a committee member of the British Society for Cutaneous Allergy, of which she is a past President. She is the author of many research papers, a regular expert reviewer for a number of academic journals and a judge at the British Association of Dermatologists' Annual Meeting. She has written a number of chapters in dermatology textbooks and is an in-demand lecturer for national and international allergy meetings. While chairing the Access to Medicines Committee of the British Association of Dermatologists, she successfully campaigned to reduce the price the NHS pays for some medicines. She sits on the Editorial Advisory Board of the international Journal 'Contact Dermatitis'.
In 2022, Dr Buckley received the remarkable honour of being awarded the Bisset Hawkins Gold Medal. This medal is awarded once every three years by the Royal College of Physicians to a Physician who has made an exceptional contribution to Public Health. The medal was primarily for her role in assisting the Department of Health to manage skin problems caused by personal protective equipment during the Covid pandemic.
Dr Buckley enjoys face-to-face clinical practice and helping patients with troubling skin problems.
