Payment information for patients with private medical insurance
Most insurance companies require pre-authorisation if they are to pay for consultations and treatment.
First Consultation
Many insurance policies have an amount which the patient had agreed to pay towards any claim (they call this amount an "excess"), following which the insurer would pay the rest. For many policies, the excess is around £100. Please check any excess on your policy prior to your consultation. If you have this information, Manx Dermatology will charge you any excess due, immediately after your consultation, and will invoice your insurance company for the balance (this saves you the inconvenience of having to pay later). Please bring means of payment to your consultation. BACS bank transfers are preferred. Cash and cheques are also accepted.
We charge £295 for an initial consultation. This fee covers all associated expenses, including secretarial support, rent, medical indemnity, continuing medical education, administration, disposables, IT systems and other costs. Some insurance companies have not increased reimbursement in line with inflation, and may only reimburse a smaller amount than £295 for a new patient consultation, leaving a balance to be paid by the patient. Please also check this prior to your appointment, so you know where you stand.
Skin surgery prices include:

the fee of the dermatology consultant (which includes expenses such as secretarial support, rent, IT systems, medical indemnity, continuing medical education and other costs)

facility fee (which covers a multitude of costs, including receptionist and nursing time, instruments, medicines, clinical waste, utilities, complying with regulatory requirements, cleaning, public liability insurance etc)

the laboratory fee (including the consultant histopathologist's fee)
The system of charges that the insurance companies operate for skin surgery is complex. We have full agreement with BUPA and WPA to cover the facility fees and the laboratory fee, and will shortly complete negotiations with other insurance companies. Dr Phillips sees, treats and carries out procedures for patients insured with AXA. Allergy care is not available through AXA.
If your consultant suggests a surgical procedure, you will be provided with a specific code and the consultant's surgical fee. Please contact your insurance company using this information, and check whether they will cover the consultant's fee and the facility / histopathology fee.
