These are most likely to appear as a rapidly-growing lump, which may be warty and sometimes painful.

 

They frequently occur on sun-exposed skin in an older person, especially those taking immune-suppressive medication.

They are usually cured by excision, and need to be treated urgently.

Some patients require plastic surgery and/or a skin graft, especially on the scalp.

​

Radiotherapy may be needed in some cases.

 

Squamous cell carcinomas can sometimes spread to distant body sites.
